Johannesburg — 22 November 2024 — SSASS Holdings, a leading provider of aviation safety solutions for the African region, unveiled FlightLine. Developed by uAvionix Corporation, FlightLine is an advanced ADS-B surveillance and situational awareness system designed to improve airport surface safety and efficiency. It plays a critical role in the FAA’s Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI), a program aimed at reducing runway incursions and enhancing ground operations at U.S. airports.
FlightLine was unveiled at the (CAASA) Commercial Aircraft Association of Southern Africa's 80th annual general meeting, along with an exhibit of various ADS-B technologies, for both General and Unmanned aviation. A temporary installed FlightStation at CAASA House, Lanseria International Airport, displayed live air traffic around Lanseria Airport, as well as in the general Johannesburg and Pretoria areas.
Key Features of FlightLine:
Real-Time Surface Monitoring: FlightLine captures ADS-B signals on both 978 and 1090 MHz frequencies from aircraft and ground vehicles equipped with ADS-B Out systems, such as uAvionix’s VTU-20. This data is displayed on a detailed airport surface map, showing runways, taxiways, and movement areas.
Enhanced Signal Validation: uAvionix’s proprietary network ensures accurate data by validating ADS-B signals to prevent issues like false targets or spoofing.
Turnkey Deployment: The system is offered as a complete service, including installation, training, maintenance, and upgrades, making it a cost-effective solution for airports without existing surface surveillance systems.
Proven Scalability: FlightLine has been successfully deployed at major airports like Indianapolis International and Austin-Bergstrom International, with plans to extend it to over 230 additional U.S. airports identified as SAI candidates.
Impact on Aviation Safety:
By improving situational awareness for air traffic controllers, FlightLine reduces the risk of runway incursions and enhances operational efficiency, particularly during high-traffic periods like holidays. The system’s rapid deployment capability, demonstrated by its installation at multiple airports in under 90 days, highlights its adaptability and value in the aviation industry
The FAA’s Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) aims to enhance safety and efficiency on airport surfaces by deploying advanced situational awareness tools. uAvionix’s swift deployment to the initial airports showcased the company’s commitment to aviation safety and its ability to meet stringent timelines with minimal disruption to air traffic control tower operations. Based on this performance, the FAA awarded uAvionix additional contracts in August 2024 to install the FlightLine capability at six more airports out of a total of 14.
